About R32 Refrigerant Gas
R32 (HFC-32, difluoromethane) is a single-component refrigerant widely used in new-generation residential air conditioning, split systems, heat pumps, and light commercial HVAC equipment as a lower-GWP alternative to R-410A. With a GWP of 675, zero ozone depletion potential (ODP = 0), and an ASHRAE A2L classification, R32 offers an effective balance of strong cooling performance, improved energy efficiency, and reduced environmental impact.
Thanks to its single-component composition, R32 is easier to service, recharge, recycle, and reclaim than many blended refrigerants, making it a practical choice for modern HVAC systems and professional installers. What is R32 refrigerant?
R32 (HFC-32, difluoromethane / CH₂F₂) is a single-component refrigerant used in modern air conditioning, split systems, heat pumps, and selected light commercial HVAC equipment. It has a GWP of 675, zero ozone depletion potential (ODP = 0), and an ASHRAE safety classification of A2L, which means low toxicity and mild flammability.
Is R32 allowed in Europe?
Yes. R32 is used in Europe in equipment designed specifically for R32 and is widely adopted in new-generation air conditioning and heat pump systems as a lower-GWP alternative to R-410A. Under EU Regulation 2024/573 (F-Gas), it is subject to rules on fluorinated greenhouse gases, including handling, emissions, and lifecycle controls.
Can R32 be used instead of R-410A in any system?
No. R32 can replace R-410A in new equipment designed for R32, but it should not be used in retrofits of existing systems unless the manufacturer specifically approves it. Honeywell’s R-32 technical data sheet states that it can replace R-410A in new air conditioning and chiller equipment, but it should not be used in equipment retrofits.
Can I refill an air conditioner with R32 myself?
No, this must be done by a specialist! The system must be checked to avoid leaks. Small recharge kits may be used personally for refilling car air conditioners.
How much R32 is needed to refill an air conditioner?
The exact refrigerant charge depends on the model, capacity, pipe length, and manufacturer specification of the unit. Always check the correct amount on the equipment nameplate, in the service manual, or in the manufacturer’s technical documentation. R32 should be charged by exact weight according to the equipment specification.
What oil is compatible with R32?
R32 systems typically use POE oil (polyol ester). The correct lubricant and viscosity grade must always match the manufacturer’s specification for the compressor and system.
Can an R32 system be topped up, or is a full recharge required?
Because R32 is a single-component refrigerant, servicing and recharging are generally more straightforward than with many blends. If the refrigerant loss is minor and the system condition is good, topping up may be possible. If the system has suffered a major leak, has been empty, or may contain moisture or air contamination, leak repair, evacuation, and a full recharge to the exact specified weight are recommended.

How should R32 cylinders be stored properly?
R32 cylinders should be stored upright in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, ignition sources, hot surfaces, and incompatible materials. Cylinders should be kept tightly closed, secured against falling, and not stored above 52°C / 125°F. R32 is classified as ASHRAE A2L, meaning low toxicity and mild flammability.
